The finished walking trail - completed by Heath Landscaping - is open and ready for use
The finished walking trail, completed by Heath Landscaping, is open and ready for use!

It’s been over a year since our March 2024 update announced a newly funded proposal by the DIP-IN Northeast Steering Committee to create a walking path and labyrinth on the grounds of former IPS School 11 and currently, Plant to Plate and the Evolve Education Center.

In November 2024, we provided an update on progress at the site, where project leads Pastor Denell Howard and Autumn Lowry, community members, and media, gathered to document the groundbreaking of the walking trail and labyrinth. Over the coming months, Heath Landscaping worked diligently to carve out the path for the trail that winds around the property, as well as the labyrinth that is intended to promote balance, self-reflection, stress reduction, and more.

We are incredibly excited to announce that in March 2025, we gathered again for the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the walking trail and labyrinth! Attendees braved the cold and rainy day to walk the path and labyrinth together and admire the other projects already happening at this site, including prep work for the gardens and chickens that have already been yielding produce and eggs for the community for the past couple years.

DIP-IN and the greater Northeast community are ecstatic to see this walking trail and labyrinth added to the community that promotes all four focus areas of our DIP-IN Steering Committees: physical activity, food access and healthy eating, life stressors, and social connections.

Pastor Howard and Autumn are also continuing to think big about what this space could offer to the community, including things like outdoor sports fields, physical activity programs at the gardens, and ultimately the dream of a thriving community center. We cannot wait to see what happens as this space continues to develop.

Take a look at the photos below to see how far this project has come, and progress from start to finish!

Interested in visiting the walking path and taking a few laps yourself (pro tip: three laps is just over one mile), or winding through the labyrinth? Visit 3202 E. 42nd St., Indianapolis, Indiana! Parking is available on site and you will surely spot a friendly face, a clucking chicken, or both!
